Dyfed Shire Horse Farm

Shire Society Spring Show 2018

Well, that’s a bit of a mouthful! Let’s just call it the Spring show for now.

Now then, picture the scene. It’s early January in a very wet, very muddy field in West Wales. In this field is a stunning, handsome young horse (that’s right, it’s me!) living with his best friends, Roo, Tam and Baby Alfie. When, out of nowhere, the ‘Girl Who Feeds Us'(GWFU) comes to me and says “let’s get you clean”

I was washed, scrubbed and given the most awful haircut. But, I was clean! My life changed from that day. I was kept in a wonderful warm stable, with all the hay I could eat. Plus 3 extra hard feeds a day. I got to wear cosy warm rugs and I was brushed everyday. Life couldn’t get much better than this, I have my own two-legged personal servant who waited on me hand and hoof. We even went riding everyday, some days it was easy. Other days we went into a ‘riding school’ where I had to learn new things. But, mostly it was good fun. I did whatever I was asked if it meant I got extra carrots when we got back home!

We can do this

As time went on the GWFU started whispering in my ear, things like “We can do this” and “You’re gonna make us proud, Eddie” I have to be honest, I had no idea what she was going on about!

Then the day arrived, I knew it had because the GWFU was running around like a headless chicken, mumbling something about “Spring Show” and “biggest gathering of shire horses in the world” I was washed again, and wrapped up to keep clean, loaded into the horsebox and away we went…. Only 5 hours later! We arrived, and I was quickly tucked into a stable and told to get some sleep.

I soon found out what the GWFU had been going on about. I was rudely awoken at 5.30am to be told to eat my breakfast and don’t get dirty! The rest of the day turned into a whirlwind of being brushed, plaited, primped and preened. I had my saddle and bridle put on and we were going for a ride. I followed the ‘Man Who Pays the Bills’ MWPtB who kept saying “You can do this” and “You’ll do great” And so I puffed my chest out and I did everything the GWFU asked of me.

Even though I was quite nervous, there was lots of other horses running around with their servants on board too. I realised this must be where they decide which of us is the best horse. (Obviously me!) But, I was the youngest horse in this group. I had only been learning for 6 weeks, whereas some of the others had an entire year, maybe more to learn all these things. I tried not to think about it and just listened to the Girl.

Ridden Showing

We were called in, there was countless humans watching, scary banners around the edges. But, I had to be big and brave. So, again I puffed out my chest and I tried to show off how beautiful I am. We were told to Walk, trot and Canter around in both directions. Then we can into the middle to be looked at closely. I was quite puffed out and when it came to the ‘Trot Up’ I struggled to pick my feet up and I tripped! How embarrassing! I knew I would be marked down for that, but we had to carry on. Once I had been checked all over by the ‘Conformation Judge’ I had to then be ridden again by the ‘Ride Judge’ I knew I had to make up for tripping earlier so I tried my absolute best and did everything he asked me.

When I got back to the GWFU she was so excited and told me I went like a dream for the judge, and she couldn’t have asked for better. I was chuffed, as I knew that meant extra carrots later!! It wasn’t a long wait, to discover who had been chosen as the best horse. And we were pulled in 7th which is amazing. We won a rosette and a hat for the Girl. I could feel her beaming with pride as she hugged my neck and whispered in my ear “I knew you could do it!”

The Lord meets a Countess

Just a couple of hours later we were in the arena again, not riding thankfully as I was shattered, But for a royal engagement, so we stood in line, for a very long time to meet somebody called the Countess of Wessex. Well if somebody can have a fun name like that then I want one too. You can all address me as Lord Edmund now. It was such a long day, I’m embarrassed to say, I slept through the entire Royal engagement, the Countess even stroked my nose and commented how beautiful, but tired I looked. Thankfully, the GWFU was awake and did all the talking.

Before I knew it I was back in the stable and having a good sleep, while the servants went off and did some shopping. Buying me lots of carrots no doubt!
